The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
